Description

Private Game Reserve – Heaven On Earth If there were a Heaven on Earth, this would certainly be it! A distinctive 300 hectare private game reserve, nestled in the foothills of Karkloof, overlooking the Albert Falls Dam, just a mere 15 minute meander from Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal and a 25 minute drive from the closest airport lies this truly magnificent African paradise.

The four bedroom main house is currently used exclusively by the owners of the Reserve, however, this could easily be transformed into a well-equipped guest lodge as all the bedrooms are extra-large, most with full en suite, a fantastic indoor Jacuzzi room with a retractable roof, a gym with a sauna, and large dining room with two lounges all leading onto the wrap around veranda with outdoor facilities including another Jacuzzi and a swimming pool,. There is also a manager’s cottage, staff quarters, workshop, multiple other outbuildings, stables and a very large shed which stores the tractors, etc.

The Reserve has 6 self-catering Villa’s and the views from each thatched villa are truly magnificent – from open grassland, African bushveld to steep valleys and gorges. The cosy thatched Villa’s all have TV & DSTV and are all elegantly decorated and furnished in neutral African colours making them a restful and relaxing space. The airy rooms opening downstairs onto wooden viewing decks with braai facilities, where you will find the wild life almost close enough to touch. Each unit sleeps 4.

Other features beautiful wedding and conference facilities with its own kitchen and well equipped ablutions, entertainment boma’s, game capture facilities, hiking, biking, riding, or just relaxing at one of the many picnic areas or rest spots.

A favourite spot is the Waterhole Boma perched on the hillside overlooking one of the three dams, here you will find shy Marsh Terrapins sunning themselves on the banks while Red Bishops flit amongst the reeds where the larger mammals from the tallest giraffe to the smallest baby warthogs gather to drink.

Another idyllic spot is the Otter’s Den River Boma, situated at the concourse of the Karkloof and Umgeni Rivers, where the otter’s spend lazy afternoons playing in the river with the call of the African Fish Eagle resounding overhead. A perfect place to relax with a book, do some fishing and enjoy sun downers.

The thriving wild life includes Nyala, Impala, Zebra, Kudu, Waterbuck, Reedbuck, Duiker, Wildebeest, Giraffe, Eland, Blesbok, Red Hartebeest, Warthog, Water Mongoose, Water Monitors, Otters, Black Backed Jackal, Serval, Caracal and Gennet. The exquisite bird life ranges from the fish eagle to the diminutive Cardinal Woodpecker and the varied reptile and insect species never fail to delight.

There is an amazing array of birdlife and commonly sighted species such as the Glossy Starling, Long-crested Eagle and Lesser Striped Swallow. One would also be fortunate to spot the Secretary Bird and African Harrier Hawk (Gymnogene) – both regular visitors to the lodge. Summer months make Reserve a hotspot for birders when all the migrants are also present.

The Reserve is a bird watchers paradise and has a grand collection bird species with over 300 species in the area – Eagles (Fish, Crowned, Black, Long Crested, Wahlbergs and Martial), Yellow-billed Kite, Jackal and Steppe Buzzard catch the thermals. At night, a multitude of Owls species can be seen perching waiting for any movement in the grass, Kingfishers (Giant, Pied, Half-collared, Malachite and Brown-hooded) are always seen round the dams darting in catching fish, Ducks (White-faced, Yellow-billed, Black and White-backed), Geese (Spurwing and Egyptian) are abundant in the 2 main dams

Water is abundant on the property with two dams, a water hole, a borehole and there are pumping rights from the River which borders part of the property.
